Dame Christine Lenehan praises inclusive education at Co-op Academy Failsworth

Co-op Academy Failsworth proudly welcomed Dame Christine Lenehan, former Director of the British Council for Disabled Children, for a special visit last week.
As a key government advisor on Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), Dame Christine’s visit to the Brierley Avenue school provided a valuable opportunity to highlight the academy’s dedication to supporting all students in achieving their full potential.
During her time at the academy, Dame Christine spent time with the Year 7 Nurture group, who were engrossed in creative writing inspired by Dracula. Impressed by their enthusiasm, she praised their creativity and engagement.
She also met with students from the Stepping Stones program, who shared their journeys in improving attendance. Passionately recounting the support they had received, they left a strong impression on Dame Christine, encouraged their progress.
In addition, she spent time with students who access the Gold Corridor at lunchtime, discussing the well-being support available to them alongside their academic learning. Once again, her attentive approach allowed students to share their experiences openly.
“It was a real pleasure to visit the Co-op Academy Failsworth and meet both staff and students,” said Dame Christine.
“It was clear that this is a school that takes inclusion seriously and provides a safe, positive stimulating environment for pupils to learn.”
Headteacher Phill Quirk added: "It was a privilege to welcome Dame Christine to our academy. She listened to our students with understanding and care, and we were fortunate to discuss our approach to supporting students with special educational needs, as well as the future of inclusive education."
