Citizenship and Religious Education

How we deliver Citizenship and RE

In years 7, 8 and 8 all students have 1 lesson of citizenship per week and 1 lesson of RE per week.

In years 10 and 11 students have 2 lessons of citizenship per week if they are following the accredited GCSE qualification.

For those students in Year 10 and 11 who have not opted to study this as a GCSE subject, they have 1 lesson per week of core Citizenship, which covers Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE), Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) and Religious Education (RE).

Qualifications delivered by the Citizenship and RE department:

  • Edexcel GCSE  Citizenship Studies
  • Edexcel GCSE Religious Studies

Department Information

We are a successful, dynamic and forward looking team of 5 full time members of staff who focus on excellent quality of education for all students.

Citizenship is part of the core curriculum at both Key Stage 3 and 4. In Years 7, 8 and 9, the course combines aspects of Citizenship and PSHE. In addition to this, students in KS3 also received 1 lesson of RE per week. At Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11) all students follow a full course in Citizenship – either GCSE Citizenship or core Citizenship. Students can also opt to study GCSE RE in Years 10 and 11.

The core curriculum at Key Stage 4 also incorporates Religious Education, PSHE, RSE and Careers. Working alongside a designated Senior Leader the department is responsible for Careers Education and this aspect of the curriculum is taken very seriously. We work closely with colleges and other partners to assist and guide students with their decisions for future pathways, including CV writing, college applications and mock interviews. The careers element of the curriculum is also enhanced by the inclusion of a programme linking the Family Groups and pastoral system.

Within the department there are a wide and varied range of co-curricular activities and trips. We lead trips to London to visit Parliament, Auschwitz, legal trips to various courts and a prison. We also have a wide range of links to the local community with guest speakers from the police, fire department, road safety, positive steps and a wide range of college providers.

We pride ourselves in ensuring that the students at Failsworth have the opportunities to develop knowledge and skills through the study of Citizenship to enable them to take a full and active part in society, within Failsworth, in the local community and beyond.

PSHE education in The Co-op Academy Failsworth is a school subject taught through the Citizenship Curriculum
It helps students to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepare for life and work in modern Britain.

PSHE has an impact on both academic and non-academic outcomes for students. Our PSHE programme aims to develop skills and attributes such as leadership, organisation, initiative, communication, resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team working and critical thinking in the context of learning grouped into three core themes: health and wellbeing, relationships and living in the wider world
