Department Information

The Mathematics department at Co-op Academy Failsworth is forward looking and dynamic. Problem solving and reasoning skills are at the core of our curriculum and pupils are afforded the opportunity to master a range of non-routine tasks using creativity, fluency and confidence.

Students follow a Singapore inspired curriculum where metacognition, visualisation and procedural and conceptual variation allow pupils to master the subject. Rich, engaging and sophisticated mathematical activities help foster a deep, conceptual understanding and a love of the subject among the academy’s students. The department is proud to be at the forefront of research into mathematics education and has excellent links with Maths Hubs, MEI, and Manchester Metropolitan University.

At KS4, students are entered for the Edexcel GCSE Mathematics examination and follow a foundation, higher or towards curriculum pathway. Our mathematics curriculum is designed to be broad and balanced, promoting academic excellence for all students, regardless of their starting points. It is ambitious and knowledge-rich, placing a strong emphasis on the development of mathematical fluency, real-life applications, and fostering a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. The mathematics curriculum is sequenced coherently, ensuring students develop a profound conceptual understanding and build strong foundations that link seamlessly with prior and future learning.

The Maths curriculum aims to:

  • Prioritise the development of mathematical fluency by ensuring students not only grasp abstract concepts but can apply them confidently in real-life situations. Through a combination of theoretical learning and practical problem-solving tasks, students are equipped with the skills to tackle mathematical challenges in various contexts.
  • Foster resilience through encouraging students to embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, and persevere in problem-solving.
  • Develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. Our curriculum emphasises conceptual mastery, enabling students to comprehend the "why" behind mathematical principles.
  • Interleave core knowledge enhances memory and retention, preparing students for their next steps in education. The curriculum is diverse and inclusive, recognising the importance of scaffolding learning to enhance engagement and support independent learning for all students.
  • Empower students to become independent learners and critical thinkers. Through activities that encourage exploration and problem-solving, students develop analytical skills and the ability to approach mathematical challenges with creativity and resourcefulness.
