Physical Education

How we deliver Physical Education

In years 7, 8 and 9 all students have one PE lesson per week.
 

In years 10 and 11 all students who have opted for the subject have two lessons of either GCSE PE, BTEC Sport or BTEC Performing Arts (Dance), or three lessons of BTEC Health and Social Care per week. If they have not opted for one of the subjects on offer, they receive 1 hour of core Physical Education per week. 

Qualifications delivered by the PE department:
  • AQA GCSE PE
  • Edexcel BTEC Sport
  • Edexcel BTEC Performing Arts (Dance)
  • Edexcel BTEC Health and Social Care

Department Information

The academy PE and Dance Department is widely recognised as a centre of sporting excellence both locally and nationally. PE, Sport and Dance plays a dominant role within the academy and is highly regarded and supported by students, staff and parents.

We encourage our students to understand how to learn in and through Physical Education, Dance and Sport and develop key skills that prepare them for being active, independent and responsible learners who take part in regular physical activity and understand the benefits of leading an active and healthy lifestyle.

At Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9) students follow a curriculum which enables them to enjoy and achieve across a number of activities and sports, preparing them fully for studies in PE and Dance at Key Stage 4. At Key Stage 4 students opting for the courses are accredited through Physical Education, Sport,  Dance or Health and Social Care.

We run a large extracurricular activities programme, where pupils can access a wide range of sports and activities, such as Football, Netball, Dance, Trampolining, Badminton, Rugby league, cross country and many more. All of these activities are designed to support students learning during curriculum time and create pathways for their sporting and physical development.

The PE and Dance Department has outstanding Teaching and Learning facilities which consist of 2 full size sports halls and one half size sports hall, dance studio, a multi-use games area, new 3G full size astro turf, tennis courts, 2 3g pitches, 3 football pitches, indoor cricket nets, fitness suite, swimming pool and 3 PE classrooms. As a department we take great pride in making our curriculum a positive and successful learning experience for our students which promotes lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.
