Proposed Period 6 For Year 10 From September 2021

4th March 2021- Proposed Period 6 For Year 10 From September 2021
Dear Parents / Carers

I am writing to consult you on our proposal to extend the school day for the current Year 9, from September 2021.  We are proposing to have an additional Period 6 added to their Year 10 timetable.  This will be an extra lesson on Monday and Tuesday each week. This will be known as Period 6 and will run until 3.45pm.  The year after when students are in Year 11, they are likely to follow the model of 3 nights each week, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.  This for Year 11 has been in place for the last 3 years.

Year 10 students will receive timetabled smaller group tuition, which will be set for approximately 6-8 week blocks, reviewed, and changed as necessary.  This will not be just an extra lesson.  It is aimed at targeting areas that need support and improvement.  Additionally, periodically we may identify some Year 10 students for support with study skills, revision planning and other bespoke areas outside of normal subjects offered.

I hope you can see that I am responding to the missed learning due to Covid and secondly to the 9 to 1 examination system that is very different to the one we previously operated.  Coursework has been removed, or significantly marginalised in many subjects and all marks rest on the final exam.

If we progress this, Period 6 on Monday and Tuesday will be a compulsory and legal part of the Year 10’s education.  If you have any feedback could I please have this by Monday 15th March, 3.00pm.  Please email info@failsworth.coop and put Year 10 Period 6 in the subject heading.  I will then consider this along with the views of other stakeholders before making a decision

Yours sincerely
